Ingredients

Chicken and Vegetables

  • 2 pounds chicken breasts or thighs, cut into cubes
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • Black pepper and chili flakes, to taste
  • 1/4 cup flour or gluten-free flour
  • 4 tablespoons melted butter or extra virgin olive oil (divided)
  • 3 cups broccoli florets
  • Salt, to taste

Sauce

  • 1/3 cup tamari or soy sauce
  • 3 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon chili paste
  • 6 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil

For Serving

  • Sesame seeds
  • Green onion, sliced
  • Cooked rice (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it with oil to prevent sticking.
  2. Season and Coat Chicken: On the prepared baking sheet, place the cubed chicken and sprinkle garlic powder, black pepper, and chili flakes over it. Toss to combine, then add the flour and toss again to coat the chicken evenly. Drizzle 2 tablespoons of melted butter over the chicken and toss to coat.
  3. Arrange Chicken and Broccoli: Arrange the coated chicken on one side of the baking sheet. On the other side, spread the broccoli florets. Toss the broccoli with the remaining melted butter or olive oil, salt, and pepper to season.
  4. Bake Chicken and Broccoli: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 10 to 15 minutes, until the chicken is cooked through and broccoli is tender.
  5. Prepare Sauce: While the chicken and broccoli bake, combine tamari or soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, chili paste, chopped garlic, ground ginger, and toasted sesame oil in a bowl or glass jar. Mix well to create the General Tso’s sauce.
  6. Coat Chicken with Sauce: Remove the broccoli from the baking sheet and set aside. Pour the prepared sauce over the chicken on the baking sheet. Toss the chicken to coat it thoroughly in the sauce.
  7. Bake Again: Return the baking sheet with the sauced chicken to the oven and bake for an additional 5 minutes, allowing the sauce to bake onto the chicken for enhanced flavor and slight caramelization.
  8. Serve: Remove from oven and transfer the chicken and broccoli to serving plates. Garnish with sliced green onions and toasted sesame seeds. Serve over cooked rice if desired.

Notes

  • Use gluten-free flour and tamari to make this recipe gluten-free.
  • If you prefer a spicier dish, increase the amount of chili flakes and chili paste.
  • Butter can be substituted entirely with olive oil for a dairy-free option.
  • Ensure chicken is cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) for safety.
  • For a crispier texture, broil the chicken with sauce for 1-2 minutes at the end, watching carefully to avoid burning.
