Delight in the sweet and savory harmony of Baked Pears with Feta, Honey & Pomegranate. This easy-to-make Mediterranean-inspired dessert combines tender oven-roasted pears caramelized with honey and aged balsamic vinegar, topped with creamy fresh feta cheese for a perfect balance of flavors and textures.

Ingredients

Pears and Seasoning

  • 4 medium firm pears (Bosc or Anjou), halved lengthwise
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • Freshly ground pepper, to taste
  • 1 teaspoon fresh Greek oregano (or dried)

For Drizzling

  • 2 tablespoons Extra Virgin Greek Olive Oil
  • 1 tablespoon Greek Thyme Honey
  • 1 teaspoon aged balsamic vinegar or Petimezi

Topping

  • Fresh Feta cheese, crumbled (amount as desired, approximately 1/2 cup)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 200°C (400°F) to ensure it reaches the perfect temperature for baking the pears evenly.
  2. Prepare Pears: Wash and halve the pears lengthwise. Use a melon baller or spoon to carefully scoop out the cores and seeds, creating neat wells in each pear half.
  3. Mix Seasoning: In a small bowl, whisk together the extra virgin olive oil, fresh or dried oregano, sea salt, and freshly ground pepper to make a flavorful drizzle.
  4. Dress Pears: Drizzle 1 tablespoon of honey and the aged balsamic vinegar or Petimezi over the cut side of the pears. This mixture aids in caramelization and adds a rich sweetness during baking.
  5. Bake Pears: Place the pears cut side up on a baking tray and bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until they are fork-tender and the edges are golden brown.
  6. Transfer and Top: Remove the pears from the oven and immediately transfer them to a serving platter. While still warm, crumble fresh feta cheese into the wells and over the tops, allowing the residual heat to soften the cheese slightly while retaining its texture.

Notes

  • Select pears that are firm but ripe, such as Bosc or Anjou, for the best texture after baking.
  • If Greek Thyme honey is unavailable, substitute with a mild floral honey for a similar effect.
  • Aged balsamic vinegar adds depth, but Petimezi (grape molasses) can be used for an authentic Greek flavor.
  • The feta cheese should be added just before serving to maintain its creamy texture without melting completely.
  • This dish pairs well with toasted nuts or a sprinkle of pomegranate seeds for extra crunch and color.
