A delightful and savory Cheesy Cruffin that combines the flaky texture of a croissant with the convenience of a muffin. This recipe features a buttery dough filled with garlic, chives, and mild cheddar cheese, baked to golden perfection and brushed with garlic butter for extra flavor.

Ingredients

Dough

  • 3 tubes (8 ounces each) refrigerated crescent roll sheets

Filling

  • ½ cup (1 stick / 113 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tablespoon chives, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon garlic, minced
  • 3 cups (339 g) mild cheddar cheese, shredded, divided

Garlic Butter

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon chives, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions

  1. Prepare the filling: In a bowl, combine the softened unsalted butter with the finely chopped chives and minced garlic until well mixed to create a flavorful garlic-chive butter.
  2. Unroll the dough: Take the refrigerated crescent roll sheets and unroll them on a clean surface. Separate the dough into individual triangles as per the crescent roll sheet design.
  3. Apply the filling: Spread a thin layer of the garlic-chive butter evenly over each triangle of dough to ensure every bite has rich flavor. Then sprinkle a portion of the shredded cheddar cheese over the buttered dough triangles, reserving some cheese for topping if desired.
  4. Roll into cruffins: Starting at the wide end of each triangle, roll the dough tightly towards the pointed end forming a crescent shape but with a tighter coil to resemble a muffin shape. Place each rolled dough into a standard muffin tin to maintain the shape during baking.
  5. Top with cheese: Sprinkle the remaining shredded cheddar cheese on top of each rolled dough to create a cheesy crust after baking.
  6. Bake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the croissant-muffin hybrids in the muffin tin for about 15-20 minutes or until the dough is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  7. Prepare the garlic butter glaze: While the cruffins are baking, mix the melted unsalted butter with the minced garlic, finely chopped chives, and kosher salt to prepare a flavorful garlic butter glaze.
  8. Brush with garlic butter: Immediately after removing the cruffins from the oven, brush the tops generously with the garlic butter glaze to enhance flavor and shine.
  9. Cool and serve: Allow the cruffins to cool slightly in the muffin tin before removing them to avoid breaking. Serve warm for the best experience of flaky, cheesy goodness.

Notes

  • Make sure the butter for the filling is softened so it spreads easily over the dough.
  • If you like, add more chives or garlic for a stronger flavor.
  • Use a non-stick or well-greased muffin tin to prevent sticking.
  • These cruffins are best enjoyed fresh and warm but can be reheated in a toaster oven for a few minutes.
  • Feel free to swap cheddar for your favorite cheese like mozzarella or pepper jack for variation.
