Classic Baked Apples are a cozy dessert made with tender baked apples stuffed with a warm oat, nut, and spice filling, perfect for a wholesome treat on cool days.

Ingredients

4 medium apples, cored (Honeycrisp or Granny Smith)

1 tbsp lemon juice

1/2 cup rolled oats

1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans

2 tbsp brown sugar

1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

1/8 tsp ground nutmeg

Pinch of salt

2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted

2 tbsp raisins or chopped dried cranberries (optional)

1/2 cup apple cider or water

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Core the apples, leaving the bottom intact to hold the filling. Brush insides with lemon juice to prevent browning.
  3. In a bowl, mix oats, nuts, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, melted butter, and raisins or cranberries if using.
  4. Spoon filling into each apple, packing gently.
  5. Place apples in a baking dish and pour apple cider or water into the bottom.
  6. Bake uncovered for 35–40 minutes, until apples are tender but still hold their shape.
  7. Serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream, if desired.

Notes

Best apple varieties are Honeycrisp or Granny Smith for balance of sweetness and tartness.

Leave the peel on to help apples hold shape during baking.

Swap nuts for seeds like pumpkin or sunflower for a nut-free version.

Maple syrup can replace brown sugar for a lighter option.

Granola makes a quick shortcut filling.
