This recipe guides you through making crispy fried tofu puffs served with a flavorful peanut dipping sauce. Perfect as a snack or appetizer, the tofu is deep-fried until golden and crispy on the outside while remaining soft inside, complemented by a tangy and spicy peanut-hoisin dipping sauce.

Ingredients

Tofu

  • 1 packet medium to extra firm tofu (14-19 ounces)
  • 2-3 cups oil for deep frying

Peanut Dipping Sauce

  • 3 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon chili flakes (adjust to taste)
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons water
  • 2 tablespoons crushed peanuts
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Choose the Right Tofu: Select medium to extra firm tofu for the best frying results. Firmer tofu will hold its shape better and yield a crispier texture.
  2. Cut into Your Preferred Shape: Slice the tofu into cubes, rectangles, or triangles according to your preference. Pat the tofu dry thoroughly with paper towels. For better frying results, gently press the tofu wrapped in paper towels to remove excess moisture.
  3. Heat the Oil: In a deep pot or fryer, heat 2-3 cups of oil over medium-high heat to 350°F (175°C). You can test the temperature by dropping a chopstick in; small bubbles around it mean the oil is ready.
  4. Deep Fry the Tofu: Using a slotted spoon or wire skimmer, carefully place tofu pieces into the hot oil. Fry for 4-7 minutes, turning to ensure all sides turn golden brown and crispy. Adjust time based on tofu piece size.
  5. Remove and Drain: Transfer fried tofu puffs onto a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil. Let them drain well.
  6. Prepare the Peanut Dipping Sauce: In a bowl, combine hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, chili flakes, water, crushed peanuts, and sesame seeds. Mix well until evenly blended.
  7. Serve: Serve the crispy fried tofu puffs warm with the peanut dipping sauce on the side for dipping.

Notes

  • Pressing tofu before frying helps achieve a crispier texture by removing excess moisture.
  • Adjust chili flakes in the dipping sauce according to your heat preference.
  • Use a deep-frying thermometer for precise oil temperature control to avoid greasy tofu.
  • The peanut dipping sauce can be made ahead and refrigerated for up to 2 days.
  • Leftover fried tofu can be reheated in an oven or air fryer to regain crispiness.
