Ingredients

1 block extra-firm tofu (about 1416 ounces)

½ cup cornstarch

Cooking oil (for frying, about ½ cup)

For the Honey Garlic Sauce:

¼ cup soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)

2 tablespoons rice vinegar (or apple cider vinegar)

¼ cup honey (or maple syrup/agave nectar for a vegan option)

45 cloves garlic, minced

1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated

½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

1 teaspoon sesame oil

For Garnish:

Toasted sesame seeds (optional)

Sliced green onions (optional)

Instructions

  1. Press the tofu to remove excess moisture for about 15 minutes using a tofu press or wrapping it in a kitchen towel with a heavy object on top.
  2. Cut the tofu into 1-inch cubes. In a shallow bowl, combine cornstarch, salt, and pepper. Toss tofu cubes in the cornstarch mixture and shake off excess.
  3. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Fry tofu cubes for 3-5 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy. Transfer tofu to a paper towel-lined plate.
  4. In a small saucepan, combine soy sauce, rice vinegar, honey, garlic, ginger, and red pepper flakes (if using). Bring to a simmer and cook for 3-5 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly. Stir in sesame oil and remove from heat.
  5. Pour the honey garlic sauce over the crispy tofu, gently tossing to coat. Let it cook for 2-3 more minutes for the sauce to caramelize slightly.
  6. Serve the tofu with a garnish of sesame seeds and sliced green onions, and enjoy over rice, noodles, or as a snack.

Notes

Pressing the tofu is crucial for achieving the crispiest texture.

Substitute coconut aminos for soy sauce to make this recipe soy-free.

Adjust spice levels by adding more or less red pepper flakes or hot sauce.
