These Fig & Goat Cheese Puff Pastry Bites are an elegant and flavorful appetizer perfect for parties or special occasions. Featuring flaky puff pastry topped with sweet fig jam, creamy goat cheese, crunchy nuts, and aromatic rosemary, these bite-sized treats combine sweet and savory elements in every delicious mouthful.

Ingredients

Pastry

  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed in fridge overnight
  • All purpose flour for dusting
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Toppings

  • ½ cup fig jam
  • 4 oz. goat cheese log
  • ½ cup raw walnuts or pecans, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh rosemary leaves
  • Flaky sea salt for topping

Instructions

  1. Prepare the pastry: Lightly dust a clean surface with all purpose flour. Roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet to smooth creases and slightly enlarge it. Using a knife or pastry cutter, cut the pastry into bite-sized squares, about 2 inches each.
  2. Assemble the bites: Place the puff pastry squares on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Spread about a teaspoon of fig jam evenly onto each square. Crumble the goat cheese over the jam layer on each piece. Sprinkle the chopped walnuts or pecans on top, followed by the finely chopped fresh rosemary leaves.
  3. Add egg wash and seasoning: Beat the egg lightly and brush the edges of the puff pastry squares with the egg wash to give a golden finish during baking. Sprinkle a pinch of flaky sea salt over each bite to enhance flavor.
  4. Bake: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake the prepared puff pastry bites for 15-18 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown and the goat cheese is slightly melted.
  5. Cool and serve: Remove from the oven and let the bites cool slightly on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a serving platter. Serve warm or at room temperature as a delicious appetizer or snack.

Notes

  • Ensure the puff pastry is properly thawed but still cold to maintain flakiness while baking.
  • You can substitute fig jam with other fruit preserves like apricot or raspberry if desired.
  • For a nut-free option, omit the walnuts or pecans and sprinkle extra rosemary or seeds instead.
  • These bites are best served fresh but can be reheated in a warm oven for a few minutes.
  • Use flaky sea salt sparingly to complement the flavors without overpowering.
