The Flying Dutchman Burger is a vegetarian delight loaded with bold flavors from a spicy, tangy In-N-Out style sauce to perfectly seared vegan patties and caramelized onions. Topped with sharp cheddar or vegan cheese, it’s a satisfying, smoky, and creamy burger experience without the meat.

Ingredients

In-N-Out Burger Sauce

¼ cup chopped yellow onions

1 tablespoon butter (or vegan butter)

⅓ cup mayo (or vegan mayo)

1 tablespoon relish

2 tablespoons sriracha

½ teaspoon soy sauce

¼ teaspoon onion powder

¼ teaspoon garlic powder

Burgers

¼ cup avocado oil

12 oz vegan burger patties (Impossible Beef recommended)

2 slices sharp cheddar cheese (or vegan cheese)

Onions

1 large yellow onion, sliced into 4 thick rounds

½ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon sugar

2 slices sharp cheddar cheese (or vegan cheese)

Instructions

  1. Make the In-N-Out sauce: Melt butter over medium heat in a skillet, add chopped onions and sauté until soft (~5 minutes). Let cool. Mix mayo, relish, sriracha, soy sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, and sautéed onions in a bowl.
  2. Caramelize the onions: Heat avocado oil in skillet over medium heat, add thick onion slices, sprinkle with salt and sugar, cook slowly until golden and caramelized (~15–20 minutes), flipping occasionally.
  3. Cook the vegan patties: Heat avocado oil over medium-high heat, cook patties 3–4 minutes per side until browned. Add cheese slices in last minute and cover to melt.
  4. Assemble the burgers: Spread sauce on bottom bun or plate, add cheesy vegan patty, caramelized onions, second cheese slice, then top bun or serve open-faced.

Notes

Use different cheese varieties like pepper jack, smoked gouda, or vegan cheese.

Add lettuce, tomato, pickles, or avocado slices for extra toppings.

Adjust sriracha to modify spice level.

Serve on gluten-free, whole grain buns, or lettuce wraps for low-carb.
