Sloppy Joe Grilled Cheese combines savory, tangy sloppy joe filling with melty cheddar cheese and crispy toasted bread. This indulgent sandwich mashup is easy to make and perfect for a hearty lunch or dinner packed with comforting flavors.

Ingredients

For the Sloppy Joe Filling:

1 lb ground beef (or turkey)

1 small onion, finely chopped

½ bell pepper, finely chopped (optional)

1 cup tomato sauce

2 tbsp ketchup

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tbsp mustard

1 tbsp brown sugar

1 tsp garlic powder

½ tsp onion powder

Salt and pepper to taste

For the Grilled Cheese:

4 slices bread (sourdough, white, or whole wheat)

4 slices cheddar cheese (or American cheese)

Butter for grilling (2-3 tbsp)

Instructions

  1. Cook ground beef with onion and bell pepper in a skillet over medium heat until browned and veggies softened. Drain fat.

  2. Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, brown sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Simmer 10-15 minutes until thickened. Remove from heat.

  3. Preheat skillet or griddle over medium heat. Butter one side of each bread slice.

  4. Place two bread slices butter-side down on skillet. Layer cheese on each slice, spoon sloppy joe filling over cheese, add another cheese slice, then top with remaining bread slices butter-side up.

  5. Cook 3-4 minutes per side until golden brown and cheese melted, pressing gently with spatula.

  6. Remove, let cool slightly, slice, and serve.

Notes

Substitute ground turkey or chicken for lighter meat.

Add pickles or jalapeños for extra flavor and heat.

Use pepper jack or mozzarella cheese for different taste.

Use sandwich rolls or buns instead of sliced bread.

Add caramelized onions or sautéed mushrooms to the filling.

Store filling separately; refrigerate up to 3 days, freeze up to 2 months.
