A festive Halloween bread with striking black and orange swirls made from activated charcoal powder and food coloring. Soft, buttery, and slightly sweet, this spooky bread is perfect for parties, gatherings, or as a fun seasonal twist on homemade bread.

Ingredients

45 cups all-purpose flour, divided

2 cups warm water, divided

2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast, divided

1/8 cup granulated sugar, divided

5 tablespoons melted butter, divided

1/2 tablespoon salt, divided

2 tablespoons food-grade activated charcoal powder

Orange food coloring

Olive oil (for brushing)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup warm water, half the yeast, half the sugar, and about 2 cups of flour. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until bubbly. Stir in 2–3 tablespoons melted butter and half the salt. Add activated charcoal powder and enough flour to form a soft black dough. Knead for 6–8 minutes until smooth. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
  2. Repeat the process with the remaining yeast, sugar, butter, salt, water, and flour, this time adding orange food coloring instead of charcoal. Knead until smooth and let rise until doubled.
  3. Punch down both doughs and roll each into a rectangle. Stack one on top of the other, then roll into a log to form a swirl pattern.
  4. Place the rolled dough into a greased loaf pan (or shape into a round loaf). Cover and let rise for 30–40 minutes.
  5. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the top with melted butter or olive oil.
  6. Bake for 30–35 minutes, until golden and hollow-sounding when tapped.
  7. Cool before slicing to reveal the swirl.

Notes

Add pumpkin puree and pumpkin spice to the orange dough for extra fall flavor.

Can be shaped into rolls instead of a loaf.

Top with sesame or poppy seeds for added crunch.

Use natural colorants like turmeric for the orange dough.

For a sweet version, swirl in chocolate chips or cinnamon sugar.
