Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy is a classic comfort dish featuring juicy, seasoned beef patties smothered in rich, savory caramelized onion gravy. This hearty and satisfying meal is easy to prepare and pairs perfectly with mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles for a comforting family dinner.
For the Steaks:
1 lb ground beef
¼ cup breadcrumbs
1 egg
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
½ tsp garlic powder
½ tsp onion powder
Salt & pepper to taste
For the Onion Gravy:
1 large onion, thinly sliced
2 tbsp butter
2 tbsp flour
1 ½ cups beef broth
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
Salt & pepper to taste
In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until combined.
Shape mixture into 4 equal-sized patties.
Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and cook patties about 4-5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 10-12 minutes.
Stir in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to eliminate raw flour taste.
Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Cook until gravy thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
Season gravy with salt and pepper to taste.
Return patties to skillet, spoon gravy over, and simmer 2-3 minutes to warm through.
For extra flavor, add mushrooms to the gravy.
Use ground turkey or chicken for a lighter variation.
For gluten-free, substitute breadcrumbs and flour with gluten-free options.
Patties can be baked instead of pan-fried.
Leftovers keep well refrigerated for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 2 months.
