Homemade Cheesy Breadsticks are soft, warm dough topped with mozzarella, cheddar, and garlic butter, creating a savory, cheesy treat perfect for dipping or enjoying on their own.

Ingredients

2¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)

1 cup warm water (about 110°F)

1 tsp sugar

2½ cups all-purpose flour

1 tsp salt

2 tbsp olive oil

1½ cups shredded mozzarella

¼ cup cheddar or Gruyère cheese (optional, for flavor boost)

3 tbsp unsalted butter, melted

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 tsp Italian seasoning

Optional: pinch of red pepper flakes or flaky salt

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Stir to dissolve, then let it sit for 5-10 minutes, or until the yeast becomes frothy and bubbly.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the activated yeast mixture and olive oil, stirring until the dough begins to come together. Once the dough starts to form, knead it on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes, or until it’s smooth and elastic.
  3. Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover with a kitchen towel. Let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
  4. While the dough rises, melt the butter in a small bowl and add minced garlic and Italian seasoning. Stir until combined and set aside.
  5. Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Roll the dough into a 10-12 inch rectangle on a lightly floured surface and transfer it to a greased baking sheet.
  6. Brush the dough with the garlic butter mixture, covering it evenly. Sprinkle the mozzarella over the dough, followed by the optional cheddar or Gruyère cheese.
  7. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the breadsticks for 12-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the dough is golden brown.
  8. Remove the breadsticks from the oven and immediately sprinkle with red pepper flakes or flaky salt, if desired. Let cool slightly before slicing.
  9. Slice into strips and serve with marinara sauce, ranch, or enjoy on their own.

Notes

Add fresh or dried herbs like basil or rosemary to the dough for extra flavor.

For a different cheese flavor, try mixing mozzarella with Parmesan, provolone, or Asiago.

If you like spice, add chili powder or cayenne pepper to the garlic butter mixture for a spicy kick.

For crispy breadsticks, bake them on a pizza stone or a preheated baking sheet.

Store leftover breadsticks in an airtight container for up to 2-3 days or freeze them for up to 3 months.
