This cozy homemade hot chocolate recipe is perfect for warming up on chilly days. Made with cocoa powder, rich milk, and melted chocolate chips, it delivers a smooth and creamy chocolate beverage topped with optional mini marshmallows and chocolate shavings. Ready in just 10 minutes, it’s a comforting treat for two servings.

Ingredients

Hot Chocolate Base

  • ½ cup water
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons cane sugar
  • 3 ½ cups milk
  • ½ cup chocolate chips
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract

Toppings

  • Mini marshmallows (for serving)
  • Chocolate shavings (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Boil Water and Mix Cocoa: Fill a small pot with the water and bring it to a boil. Once boiling, whisk in the cocoa powder and cane sugar thoroughly to dissolve and blend the flavors.
  2. Add and Heat Milk: Reduce the heat to medium and gradually whisk in the milk. Continue to cook the mixture over medium heat until the milk is warm but avoid letting it boil, which should take about 3 minutes.
  3. Melt Chocolate Chips: Add the chocolate chips to the pot and keep whisking the hot chocolate until the chips melt completely and the mixture turns smooth and creamy, about 2 more minutes.
  4. Finish with Vanilla: Remove the pot from heat and stir in the vanilla extract to enhance the flavor.
  5. Serve: Pour the hot chocolate into mugs and top with mini marshmallows and chocolate shavings as desired for an indulgent finish.

Notes

  • Use whole milk for a creamier texture; alternatively, substitute with plant-based milk for a dairy-free version.
  • Adjust sugar to taste depending on your preference for sweetness.
  • Be careful not to let the milk boil to prevent a scorched taste.
  • Adding a pinch of cinnamon or chili powder can add a warming spice twist.
  • The recipe serves 2, but can be easily doubled or tripled for more servings.
