Indian Frybread is a crispy, soft, and golden fried dough that’s perfect as a snack or a base for savory dishes like tacos or chili, or sweetened with powdered sugar or honey. This easy-to-make comfort food is versatile and delicious, offering a simple yet satisfying treat for any occasion.
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup warm water
Make the Dough:
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
Gradually add the warm water, stirring until the dough starts to come together. Knead on a lightly floured surface for 2-3 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add more flour if the dough is too sticky or more water if it’s too dry.
Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let it rest for 10-15 minutes.
Fry the Bread:
Heat 1-2 inches of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Test the oil by dropping a small piece of dough into it – it should sizzle and rise to the surface.
Divide the dough into 6-8 small balls. Roll each ball into a flat circle about 1/4 inch thick.
Fry the dough in the hot oil for 1-2 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy. Flip carefully using tongs or a spatula.
Remove the frybread from the oil and drain excess oil on a paper towel-lined plate.
Serve:
Serve the frybread warm. Enjoy as-is, or top with taco fillings, chili, powdered sugar, honey, cinnamon sugar, or jam for a sweet treat.
For a savory variation, top with taco fillings, chili, or stew.
Sweeten with powdered sugar, honey, or jam, or sprinkle with cinnamon sugar.
Stuff the frybread with your favorite fillings, such as ground beef, chicken, or vegetables, before frying.
