1 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup cornstarch

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon pepper

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 cup water (add more if needed for consistency)

For Frying

Vegetable oil for deep frying (about 4 cups)

For the Sesame Sauce

2 tablespoons soy sauce

2 tablespoons honey

1 tablespoon rice vinegar

1 tablespoon sesame oil

1 tablespoon hoisin sauce

1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water

1/4 cup sesame seeds

1 tablespoon chopped green onions (for garnish)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Batter: Combine flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Gradually add water until the batter is smooth. Coat the chicken pieces in the batter.

  • Fry the Chicken: Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or pot to 330-340°F (165-170°C). Fry the chicken pieces in batches for 5-7 minutes until golden and cooked through. Remove and drain on a wire rack.

  • Double Fry (Optional): For extra crispiness, fry the chicken a second time at 375°F (190°C) for 30-60 seconds until golden brown and crispy.

  • Make the Sauce: In a bowl, combine soy sauce, honey, rice vinegar, sesame oil, hoisin sauce, and cornstarch mixture. Stir until smooth.

  • Cook the Sauce: Bring the sauce to a boil over medium heat and simmer for 1-2 minutes until slightly thickened.

  • Toss the Chicken: Add the fried chicken to the pan with the sauce, tossing to coat. Add sesame seeds and stir to combine.

  • Garnish and Serve: Serve the sesame chicken with rice and vegetables, garnished with chopped green onions.

Notes

Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Reheating: Reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10 minutes to maintain the crispy texture.

Variations: Add vegetables like bell peppers or snap peas for added flavor and texture. For a spicy version, add chili paste or red pepper flakes to the sauce.
