Classic creamy sour cream mashed potatoes made with tender boiled potatoes, rich butter, milk, and tangy sour cream. This comforting side dish is perfectly seasoned with salt and black pepper, ideal for family dinners and holiday meals.

Ingredients

Potatoes

  • 3 pounds potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks

Dairy and Seasoning

  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 3/4 cup sour cream
  • 1 1/4 tablespoons salt, divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Prepare the potatoes: Clean and peel the potatoes. Cut them into approximately 1-inch chunks to ensure even cooking. Place the potato chunks in a large pot and cover with cold water. Add 1 tablespoon of salt to the water to season the potatoes while boiling.
  2. Cook the potatoes: Bring the pot of water with potatoes to a boil over medium-high heat. Let them boil for 15 to 20 minutes or until the potatoes are tender and easily pierced with a fork. Drain the water and return the potatoes to the empty pot to keep warm.
  3. Heat butter and milk: While potatoes are resting in the warm pot, combine butter and milk in a small saucepan. Warm over medium-low heat until the butter is fully melted and the mixture is heated through but not boiling.
  4. Mash and season: Pour the warm butter and milk mixture over the potatoes. Use a potato masher to start mashing the potatoes gradually. Add the sour cream, remaining 1/4 tablespoon salt, and black pepper. Continue mashing until the potatoes reach your desired creamy consistency.
  5. Serve: Serve the mashed potatoes warm as a comforting side dish to complement your meal. Enjoy!

Notes

  • For extra creaminess, you can substitute half-and-half for milk.
  • Adjust salt to taste after mashing, as different potatoes absorb salt differently.
  • Use a potato ricer instead of a masher for an ultra-smooth texture.
  • If you prefer, warm the sour cream slightly before adding to avoid cooling the potatoes too much.
  • To keep mashed potatoes warm before serving, keep the pot covered on very low heat or place in a warm oven.
