A flavorful and satisfying Tofu BBQ Sandwich featuring smoky, spiced tofu simmered in rich BBQ sauce, served on toasted buns with crunchy coleslaw and sliced red onions. Perfect for a quick and tasty vegan dinner.

Ingredients

Tofu & Seasoning

  • 3 14-oz blocks extra-firm tofu (pressed)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt

Other

  • ¾ cup BBQ sauce
  • 6 burger buns
  • 1½ cups coleslaw
  • 1 small red onion (thinly sliced)

Instructions

  1. Press the tofu: Press the tofu for at least 15 minutes to remove excess water, which helps improve texture and allows it to absorb more flavor. Then tear or slice the tofu into irregular strips about ½-inch wide for an appealing rustic look and even cooking.
  2. Sauté the tofu: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the tofu strips along with smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and kosher salt. Sauté for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the tofu is lightly browned and slightly crispy on the edges, developing a smoky, savory flavor.
  3. Add BBQ sauce and simmer: Pour the BBQ sauce over the tofu in the skillet and stir to coat evenly. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for approximately 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and clings nicely to the tofu strips for maximum taste.
  4. Assemble the sandwiches: Toast the burger buns if desired for added texture and warmth. Pile the BBQ tofu onto the bottom buns, top generously with coleslaw and thinly sliced red onion for crunch and tang, then close with the top bun. Serve immediately to enjoy the contrast of warm barbecue tofu and crisp fresh toppings.

Notes

  • Pressing tofu well is essential to prevent sogginess and help it absorb flavors better.
  • Use your favorite BBQ sauce—smoky, spicy, or sweet—depending on preference.
  • Coleslaw can be store-bought or homemade; it adds a nice crunch and balances the smoky tofu.
  • For gluten-free option, substitute buns with gluten-free bread or wraps.
  • To add more protein, consider adding avocado slices or plant-based cheese.
  • Leftover BBQ tofu can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days and reheated gently.
