This savory baked onion recipe features a large yellow onion seasoned with a flavorful blend of Cajun, Old Bay, garlic powder, and dried parsley, then baked in foil with melted butter to create a tender, aromatic side dish perfect for enhancing any meal.

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 1 large yellow onion
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cajun seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit to get it ready for baking the onion.
  2. Prepare the onion: Cut off both ends of the yellow onion. Using a melon baller or small spoon, carefully scoop out the center of the onion about halfway down, creating a hollow space to hold the seasoning and butter.
  3. Season the onion: In a small bowl, combine the Cajun seasoning, Old Bay seasoning, kosher salt, dried parsley, garlic powder, and black pepper. Place the onion on a large piece of aluminum foil set on a rimmed baking sheet. Spoon half of the seasoning mixture into the hollow center of the onion, sprinkle some on top, then pour the melted butter into the center. Add the remaining seasoning evenly over the onion.
  4. Seal in foil packet: Bring the sides of the aluminum foil together and fold them tightly to create a secure packet, locking in all the flavors and moisture during baking.
  5. Bake the onion: Place the foil packet on the rimmed baking sheet in the preheated oven. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes until the onion is tender and infused with the seasoning and butter.
  6. Serve: Carefully remove the foil packet from the oven and open it with caution as steam will escape. Serve the baked onion immediately as a flavorful side dish or appetizer.

Notes

  • Use a melon baller or small spoon for scooping the onion center to avoid breaking the outer layers.
  • Carefully open the foil packet after baking to prevent steam burns.
  • Adjust seasoning to taste for a milder or spicier onion.
  • Serve alongside grilled meats, roasted vegetables, or as a flavorful addition to salads.
