Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk (warm)
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 4 tablespoons butter (melted but cooled)
  • 1 large egg (beaten)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons instant vanilla pudding mix

Filling Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons butter (room temperature)
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon

Frosting Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons butter (room temperature)
  • 4 oz cream cheese (room temperature)
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare Dough: In the bottom of the bread machine pan, add the warmed milk, granulated sugar, melted butter, and yeast.
  2. Add Egg and Butter: Add the beaten egg and additional melted butter to the pan.
  3. Add Dry Ingredients: Finally, add the salt, all-purpose flour, and instant vanilla pudding mix on top.
  4. Dough Cycle: Close the lid and select the dough cycle on your bread machine. Allow the machine to mix and let the dough rise; this usually takes about 1.5 hours. Do not open the lid during this process.
  5. Roll Out Dough: Once the dough cycle completes, remove the dough onto a floured surface. Punch it down gently, then roll out into a rectangle approximately 14 by 10 inches.
  6. Spread Butter: Spread the room temperature butter over the dough, leaving about a 1/2 inch border around the edges to seal properly later.
  7. Mix Filling: In a bowl, combine brown sugar, granulated sugar, and cinnamon thoroughly.
  8. Apply Filling: Evenly spread the cinnamon-sugar mixture over the buttered dough and gently pat it into the butter to help it stick.
  9. Roll and Seal: Starting from the long side, roll the dough tightly lengthwise into a log. Pinch the seam closed to keep the roll intact.
  10. Slice Rolls: Using a sharp knife, cut the rolled dough into 12 equal pieces.
  11. Proof Rolls: Place the cut rolls into a greased 9×13 baking dish, spacing them slightly apart. Cover with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel and allow them to rise until doubled in size, about 30-45 minutes.
  12. Bake Rolls: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove cover and bake the rolls for 15-20 minutes, until they are golden brown and cooked through.
  13. Prepare Frosting: Using a mixer, beat together the cream cheese and room temperature butter until smooth and creamy.
  14. Add Frosting Ingredients: Add half of the powdered sugar, 1 tablespoon milk, and vanilla extract to the cream cheese mixture. Mix until smooth.
  15. Finish Frosting: Add the remaining powdered sugar and milk gradually, mixing until the frosting is creamy and spreadable. Adjust milk quantity as needed to get desired consistency.
  16. Frost Rolls: Spread the cream cheese frosting liberally over the warm cinnamon rolls. Serve immediately for best enjoyment.

Notes

  • Make sure the milk is warm (around 110°F) but not hot to avoid killing the yeast.
  • Instant vanilla pudding mix adds extra moisture and flavor to the dough but can be omitted if unavailable.
  • Use fresh yeast for best results; check expiration dates on packets.
  • You can prepare the dough the night before and refrigerate after the first rise, then shape and bake the next day.
  • For softer rolls, cover the baked rolls with a damp cloth for a few minutes before frosting.
  • Adjust sugar in the filling according to taste preferences.
  • Make sure butter and cream cheese are at room temperature for smooth frosting.
