This Burrata Caprese salad is a fresh and vibrant dish featuring ripe tomatoes, creamy burrata cheese, and a zesty basil vinaigrette. Perfect as a light appetizer or side dish, it brings together simple Mediterranean flavors with a hint of sweetness and spice from honey and red pepper flakes.

Ingredients

Basil Vinaigrette

  • 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/4 cup champagne or red wine vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons honey
  • 1/2 finely chopped shallot
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • Pinch of red pepper flakes
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 cup fresh chopped basil

Salad

  • 3-4 cups of sliced tomatoes (various shapes and sizes, whatever is fresh)
  • 8 ounces fresh burrata cheese (broken in half or quarters)
  • 1/2 cup fresh basil leaves
  • Flaky sea salt to taste
  • Crusty bread for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the basil vinaigrette: Add all the vinaigrette ingredients—olive oil, vinegar, honey, chopped shallot, lemon zest, red pepper flakes, kosher salt, and chopped basil—to a glass jar with a lid. Seal and shake vigorously until well combined. Refrigerate the vinaigrette until ready to use.
  2. Arrange the tomatoes: Slice the tomatoes and lay them evenly on a serving platter, making sure to cover the base for a beautiful presentation.
  3. Add burrata cheese: Break the burrata balls into halves or quarters and place them thoughtfully on top of the sliced tomatoes, allowing the creamy texture to be visible.
  4. Garnish and season: Scatter fresh basil leaves over the tomatoes and burrata. Sprinkle flaky sea salt to taste for enhanced flavor.
  5. Dress the salad: Just before serving, drizzle the basil vinaigrette evenly over the entire platter to coat the ingredients lightly without overpowering their freshness.
  6. Optional serving suggestion: Serve the salad alongside crusty bread to complement the creamy cheese and soak up the vinaigrette.

Notes

  • You can substitute champagne vinegar with red wine vinegar if preferred.
  • The salad is best served fresh to enjoy the creamy texture of burrata and the crispness of tomatoes.
  • Adjust honey and red pepper flakes to your taste for sweetness and heat balance.
  • Use a variety of tomatoes (cherry, heirloom, roma) for visual appeal and diverse flavors.
