Butter Candle is a creative and flavorful way to serve garlic herb butter as a lit candle on bread. This unique presentation uses herbed butter molded around an edible wick that can be lit to melt the butter, infusing warm bread with rich, melted garlic parsley butter. Perfect as a novel appetizer or party treat, it combines simple ingredients into a fun interactive dining experience.

Ingredients

Butter Candle Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter, room temperature
  • 1 tablespoon parsley, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • ⅛ teaspoon salt, thick flakes
  • ⅛ teaspoon black pepper, thick flakes
  • ⅛ teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 3 paper cups (2 ounce) or ceramic condiment dishes
  • 1 edible wick, 4 inches (food-safe beeswax or hemp)

Instructions

  1. Blend the Butter: In a mixing bowl or using a stand mixer, whisk the room temperature butter until smooth and creamy. Add the chopped parsley, minced garlic, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Mix thoroughly to combine all ingredients evenly into the butter.
  2. Make the Candle: Take a paper cup and insert a toothpick, skewer, or large needle through the center of the bottom to create a hole. Feed a 4-inch edible wick through this hole. Using a small rubber spatula or spreader, press the herbed butter into the paper cup evenly around the wick until the cup is full and packed. Gently tug the wick from the top and bottom to center it in the butter. Place the cups in the refrigerator for 30 minutes or until the butter solidifies. Once firm, carefully tear and remove the paper cup from the butter candle.
  3. To Serve: Warm or bake a round loaf of bread. Cut the loaf into quarters or eighths. Insert the butter candle upright into the cut bread pieces. Light the candle wick. As the candle burns, the butter melts, seeping into the bread slices and imparting rich garlic parsley flavor.

Notes

  • Use unsalted butter if you prefer better control over salt levels.
  • Be sure to use a food-safe wick that is non-toxic such as beeswax or hemp designed for culinary use.
  • You can swap parsley for other fresh herbs like chives or thyme for a different flavor profile.
  • When lighting the wick, do so carefully and extinguish before eating the wax wick if it is not edible.
  • Store unused butter candles in the refrigerator to keep firm.
