A flavorful and easy-to-make recipe for Chicken Wontons in Spicy Chili Sauce, combining tender wontons, sautéed shiitake mushrooms, and a savory-sweet spicy sauce. Perfect for a quick weeknight meal or appetizer with a delicious balance of textures and bold flavors.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons sesame oil, divided
  • 8 ounces shiitake mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 clove garlic, grated
  • 12-ounce bag frozen chicken cilantro wontons (mini size preferred)
  • 1-2 cups chicken broth (adjust for desired soupiness)
  • 1/2 cup teriyaki sauce
  • 1-2 tablespoons chili crisp
  • Green onions, sliced (for garnish)
  • Sesame seeds (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Sauté Mushrooms and Garlic: Heat 1 tablespoon of sesame oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced shiitake mushrooms and sauté until they are softened and flavorful. During the last minute or two of sautéing, add the grated garlic to release its aroma without burning.
  2. Simmer Wontons: Add the frozen wontons directly to the skillet along with chicken broth and teriyaki sauce. Cover with a lid and simmer for about 5 minutes, or until the wontons are thoroughly heated and cooked through.
  3. Add Finishing Touches: Stir in the remaining 2 tablespoons of sesame oil and chili crisp to the skillet, mixing well to coat the wontons and mushrooms with the spicy, savory sauce. Remove from heat.
  4. Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle sliced green onions and sesame seeds on top to add fresh flavor and texture. Serve hot as a comforting appetizer or main dish.

Notes

  • You can adjust the amount of chicken broth to make it more or less soupy based on your preference.
  • For extra heat, add more chili crisp or a dash of chili flakes.
  • Mini chicken cilantro wontons are recommended for best flavor, but any frozen chicken wontons can be used.
  • Ensure not to overcook the mushrooms; they should be tender but still have some bite.
  • This dish pairs well with steamed rice or as a hearty snack on its own.
