Ingredients

Churros

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 egg
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)

Cinnamon Sugar

  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon

Coffee Chocolate Sauce

  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • ½ cup dark chocolate chips
  • 1 tsp instant espresso powder
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare the churro dough: In a medium saucepan, bring the water, butter, sugar, and salt to a boil over medium heat. Remove from heat and quickly stir in the flour until the mixture forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the pan.
  2. Cool and add egg: Allow the dough to cool slightly, then stir in the vanilla extract and the egg until fully incorporated and smooth. The dough will be thick and sticky.
  3. Heat oil for frying: Heat about 2-3 inches of oil in a deep pot or skillet to 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer to maintain the temperature for consistent frying.
  4. Pipe the churros: Transfer the dough to a piping bag fitted with a large star tip. Carefully pipe 4-6 inch lengths of dough directly into the hot oil, cutting with scissors or a knife to release the dough.
  5. Fry until golden: Fry the churros in batches, turning occasionally, for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crisp. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  6. Coat with cinnamon sugar: In a shallow dish, combine the sugar and cinnamon. While the churros are still warm, roll them in the cinnamon sugar to coat evenly.
  7. Prepare the coffee chocolate sauce: In a small saucepan, gently heat the heavy cream until it just begins to simmer. Remove from heat and add the dark chocolate chips, instant espresso powder, and vanilla extract. Stir until the chocolate is fully melted and sauce is smooth.
  8. Serve: Serve the warm churros alongside the coffee chocolate sauce for dipping. Enjoy immediately for the best texture and flavor.

Notes

  • Ensure oil temperature remains steady to avoid greasy or undercooked churros.
  • You can substitute dark chocolate chips with semi-sweet if preferred.
  • For a dairy-free sauce, replace heavy cream with coconut cream and use dairy-free chocolate chips.
  • Consume churros fresh as they lose crispness when cooled.
