This Classic Mojito recipe is a refreshing Cuban cocktail that balances the bright flavors of fresh mint, tangy lime, sweet sugar, and crisp club soda with smooth white rum. Perfect for a quick 5-minute preparation, this drink is ideal for warm weather or anytime you want a light, invigorating beverage with a touch of sophistication.

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ teaspoons sugar, to taste
  • 4 leafy sprigs of fresh mint, each about 5 to 6 inches long
  • 2 ounces white rum
  • ¾ ounce lime juice
  • Ice
  • Club soda or sparkling water (such as Topo Chico)
  • 1 to 2 drops Angostura bitters (optional)
  • 1 lime round, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the glass: In a sturdy, heavy-bottomed, tall cocktail glass, add the sugar and 3 sprigs of fresh mint, keeping one sprig reserved for garnish.
  2. Muddle the mint and sugar: Gently muddle the mint with the sugar about 5 to 10 times until the mint releases aromatic oils and becomes very fragrant without being shredded.
  3. Add rum and lime juice: Pour in the white rum and freshly squeezed lime juice, then gently stir a few times to help dissolve the sugar fully. Fill the glass with ice cubes to chill the mixture.
  4. Top with club soda: Fill the glass almost to the top with club soda or sparkling water. Use a gentle circular stirring motion to combine the ingredients, then drag some of the muddled mint leaves upward into the drink for enhanced flavor and visual appeal.
  5. Adjust sweetness and add bitters: Taste the cocktail and add more sugar if desired. Optionally, add 1 to 2 drops of Angostura bitters for an aromatic depth.
  6. Garnish and serve: Place a lime round inside the glass. Take the reserved mint sprig, gently clap it between your palms to release essential oils, and tuck it into the glass with the leaves protruding. Serve the mojito cold with a wide straw for sipping.

Notes

  • For the freshest flavor, use freshly squeezed lime juice instead of bottled juice.
  • Choose white rum for a clean, light base; avoid aged or spiced rums as they can overpower the mint and lime.
  • Be careful not to over-muddle the mint to prevent bitterness.
  • Club soda can be swapped with sparkling water or flavored seltzer for a variation.
  • Adjust sugar to taste depending on your preference for sweetness.
  • Angostura bitters are optional but add complexity and a hint of spice.
  • Use a tall sturdy glass to accommodate the ice, soda, and muddled ingredients comfortably.
