Ideal for a simple dinner or snack, this recipe can be customized with your choice of bread and cheese varieties.

Ingredients

Bread & Spread

  • 2 slices bread (white, sourdough, or whole wheat)
  • 1 tablespoon softened butter or mayo

Cheese

  • 2-3 slices cheese (sharp cheddar, American, provolone, Swiss, gouda, or a combo)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 370°F (188°C) for 3–5 minutes to ensure an even cooking temperature for the sandwich.
  2. Assemble the Sandwich: Spread softened butter evenly on one side of each bread slice. Place one slice butter-side down. Layer 2-3 cheese slices evenly on the bread, keeping cheese slightly away from the edges to prevent leaking. Top with the other slice of bread, butter-side up. Gently press the sandwich together, then insert a toothpick vertically through the center to keep the sandwich intact during cooking.
  3. Air Fry the Sandwich: Place the sandwich in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Cook at 370°F for 4–5 minutes. Carefully flip the sandwich over and continue cooking for another 3–4 minutes until both sides are deeply golden brown and the cheese is fully melted. Adjust time depending on bread thickness and air fryer model.
  4. Rest and Serve: Remove the sandwich carefully from the air fryer. Remove the toothpick, slice the sandwich if desired, and serve immediately while warm and melty.

Notes

  • Use your favorite type of bread and cheese to customize your grilled cheese.
  • Butter creates a crispier crust, while mayo can add extra richness and browning.
  • Monitor cooking progress to avoid burning due to different air fryer models and bread thickness.
  • For extra flavor, add tomato slices, bacon, or herbs between the cheese slices.
  • The toothpick helps keep the sandwich intact but remember to remove it before eating.
