Ingredients

Chicken Skewers

  • 1 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • Bamboo skewers, soaked in water for 30 minutes

Honey Garlic Sauce

  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup water (divided: 60ml for cornstarch slurry)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Grill or Oven: Begin by preheating your grill to medium-high heat or your oven to 400°F (200°C) if you prefer to bake.
  2. Prepare the Chicken: Thread the cubed chicken pieces onto the soaked bamboo skewers, spacing them slightly to ensure even cooking and prevent sticking.
  3. Make the Honey Garlic Sauce: In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant but not browned. Whisk in the honey, apple cider vinegar, soy sauce, and brown sugar, bringing the mixture to a gentle simmer. Mix the cornstarch with 1/4 cup (60ml) of water until smooth, then stir it into the sauce. Continue cooking and stirring until the sauce thickens, about 2 to 3 minutes, then remove from heat.
  4. Cook the Chicken Skewers: If grilling, place the skewers on the preheated grill and cook for 5 to 7 minutes on each side until the chicken is cooked through and has a slight char. Brush the honey garlic sauce over the chicken during the last few minutes of grilling to glaze. Alternatively, if baking, arrange the skewers on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes. Then brush with sauce and broil for 2 to 3 minutes to get a glossy, caramelized finish.
  5. Rest and Serve: Remove the skewers from heat and let rest for a few minutes to allow juices to redistribute. Serve warm with extra honey garlic sauce on the side for dipping, enhancing the sweet-savory flavor experience.

Notes

  • Soaking the bamboo skewers prevents them from burning on the grill or in the oven.
  • Ensure chicken pieces are uniform in size for even cooking.
  • You can substitute chicken thighs for juicier skewers if desired.
  • Brush the sauce on at the end of cooking to avoid burning the sugars in the sauce.
  • Leftover sauce can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
