A simple and quick recipe for a traditional and smooth cup of matcha tea, made by whisking matcha powder with hot water to create a frothy, vibrant green tea perfect for a calming and energizing drink.

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • ½ teaspoon matcha powder
  • ¼ cup hot water
  • 1 cup additional hot water
  • Optional: honey, maple syrup, or other sweetener to taste

Instructions

  1. Sift the Matcha: Sift the matcha powder into a mug or small bowl to remove any lumps ensuring a smooth texture for the tea.
  2. Whisk the Matcha: Pour ¼ cup of hot water into the mug. Use a bamboo matcha whisk (chasen) and whisk vigorously in a ‘W’ pattern for about 30 seconds until the mixture becomes frothy and well blended. Alternatively, an electric frother can be used for convenience.
  3. Fill Up the Mug: Add the remaining 1 cup of hot water to the mug. Stir gently if needed, and sweeten with honey, maple syrup, or your preferred sweetener to taste. Enjoy immediately.

Notes

  • Use water heated to about 175°F (80°C) to avoid bitterness from boiling water.
  • Sifting the matcha is crucial to prevent clumps and ensure a smooth tea.
  • If you do not have a bamboo whisk, an electric frother is a great alternative.
  • Adjust sweetness based on personal preference; matcha by itself has a slightly grassy and pleasant taste.
  • Best consumed fresh, as matcha can settle or become bitter if left standing too long.
