A refreshing and easy-to-make sparkling blueberry lemonade that combines the sweetness of homemade blueberry syrup with the tartness of fresh lemon juice, topped off with sparkling water for a bubbly finish. Perfect for a quick summer beverage to enjoy immediately.

Ingredients

Blueberry Syrup

  • 2/3 cup sugar (superfine is best)
  • 2/3 cup water
  • 1 1/2 cups fresh blueberries
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest

Lemonade

  • 4 to 5 large lemons (to yield 1 cup lemon juice)
  • 2 cups ice cubes
  • 3 cups sparkling water (or club soda, sparkling lemon lime water works well)

Instructions

  1. Add Blueberries, Sugar, and Water: Combine the superfine sugar, water, fresh blueberries, and 1 teaspoon of lemon zest in a medium pot to prepare the syrup base.
  2. Boil and Simmer: Place the pot over medium heat, bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 10 minutes until the sugar has dissolved and the blueberries begin to burst, releasing their juices.
  3. Cool and Strain: Remove the pot from heat and strain the mixture through a fine sieve to remove solids, capturing the smooth blueberry syrup. Allow the syrup to cool completely before proceeding.
  4. Juice Lemons: While the syrup is cooling, juice 4 to 5 large lemons to obtain 1 cup of fresh lemon juice for the lemonade.
  5. Combine Ingredients: In a large pitcher, mix the cooled blueberry syrup, freshly squeezed lemon juice, and ice cubes. Stir well to chill and blend the flavors.
  6. Serve and Sparkle: Just before serving, stir in 3 cups of sparkling water or club soda to add effervescence. Serve immediately to enjoy the freshness and bubbles; do not pre-mix if planning to store leftovers to maintain fizziness.

Notes

  • Use superfine sugar for quicker dissolving and a smoother syrup.
  • Adjust the amount of lemon juice to your preferred tartness.
  • Use sparkling lemon-lime water for extra citrus flavor.
  • Do not add sparkling water before storing; add just before serving to keep the bubbles.
  • Leftover syrup can be refrigerated for up to one week and used in cocktails or other beverages.
