These French Dip Sliders are a delicious twist on the classic sandwich, featuring tender deli roast beef, melted provolone cheese, and crispy fried onions nestled in soft Hawaiian sweet rolls. Baked until golden and served with a flavorful homemade au jus dipping sauce, these sliders are perfect for parties, game days, or a comforting family meal.

Ingredients

Sliders

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (softened)
  • 12-count package Hawaiian sweet dinner rolls
  • 1 pound deli roast beef
  • 12 slices provolone cheese (divided)
  • 1-1/2 cups crispy fried onions (optional)

Butter Mixture

  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
  • 3/4 teaspoon dried minced garlic
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 packet au jus gravy mix (divided)
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Spread 2 tablespoons of softened butter all over a 9×13-inch baking pan and line it with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. Slice Rolls: Using a serrated bread knife, carefully slice the entire block of Hawaiian sweet rolls horizontally in half, keeping the rolls attached to one another. Place the bottom half of the rolls in the prepared baking pan.
  3. Layer Ingredients: Layer 6 slices of provolone cheese evenly over the bottom half of the rolls, followed by the deli roast beef. If using, sprinkle the crispy fried onions on top, then add the remaining 6 slices of cheese. Place the top half of the rolls over the layered ingredients to form the sliders.
  4. Prepare Butter Mixture: In a small microwave-safe bowl, melt 8 tablespoons of butter. Add 1 tablespoon sesame seeds, 3/4 teaspoon dried minced garlic, 1/2 teaspoon onion powder, 1 packet of au jus gravy mix (reserve one packet for dipping sauce), and 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce. Whisk until well combined.
  5. Brush Rolls: Spread about three-quarters of the butter mixture evenly over the tops and sides of the rolls. Save the remaining mixture for future use. Refrigerate any leftovers.
  6. Bake Sliders: Bake the sliders uncovered in the preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and gooey and the tops of the rolls turn golden brown.
  7. Prepare Au Jus Sauce: While the sliders bake, prepare the au jus dipping sauce. Heat the remaining packet of au jus gravy mix in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the appropriate amount of cold water as indicated on the packet, whisk to combine, bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer until slightly thickened.
  8. Serve: Once baked, remove the sliders from the oven and carefully cut them into squares along the roll divisions using a sharp knife. Serve the sliders warm with the hot au jus dipping sauce on the side.

Notes

  • Use Hawaiian sweet rolls for a soft, slightly sweet base that complements the roast beef perfectly.
  • Roast beef from the deli works best for convenience, but fresh roast beef can be used if preferred.
  • Crispy fried onions add a nice crunch and extra flavor but are optional.
  • The leftover butter mixture can be refrigerated and used later on steak or bread for added flavor.
  • Ensure to slice the rolls carefully to keep them attached which helps when baking and serving.
