This classic French Onion Dip features rich, caramelized onions combined with creamy sour cream and mayonnaise, enhanced with sherry and Worcestershire sauce for a perfect balance of savory flavors. Ideal as a flavorful accompaniment for chips, vegetables, or crackers, this dip takes about an hour to prepare and serves eight guests.

Ingredients

Dip Ingredients

  • 3 Tablespoons salted butter
  • 3 cups onions, diced
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 teaspoons cooking sherry (plus 1 additional teaspoon, to taste)
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper

Garnish

  • Fresh chives
  • Reserved caramelized onions
  • Fresh cracked pepper

Instructions

  1. Caramelize Onions: Melt the salted butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onions along with salt and pepper. Sauté while stirring regularly until the onions start to brown. Then reduce the heat to low and continue cooking for 40-45 minutes, stirring occasionally until the onions are deeply browned and caramelized.
  2. Add Flavorings: Stir in the cooking sherry, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, and garlic powder to the caramelized onions. Remove from heat and set aside to cool slightly.
  3. Combine With Creamy Base: In a medium mixing bowl, mix the sour cream and mayonnaise together. Add the caramelized onion mixture (reserving some onions for garnish) and combine well until smooth and evenly blended.
  4. Serve and Garnish: Transfer the dip to a small serving bowl. Garnish with the reserved caramelized onions, fresh chives, and freshly cracked black pepper for a beautiful presentation and added flavor.

Notes

  • Use medium to large onions for optimal caramelization and sweetness.
  • Cooking sherry can be substituted with dry white wine or a splash of lemon juice if preferred.
  • For a richer dip, increase the mayonnaise slightly.
  • The dip can be made a few hours ahead and refrigerated; bring to room temperature before serving.
  • Pair with potato chips, fresh vegetable sticks, or crispy crackers.
