This Gyro Inspired Shredded Beef recipe features tender, slow-cooked beef roast seasoned with Middle Eastern spices, seared to perfection, and cooked low and slow in a slow cooker. The beef is shredded and mixed with flavorful cooking juices, red onions, garlic, and a hint of fresh lemon and cilantro, offering a delicious, easy-to-make version of classic gyro meat that’s perfect for wraps, salads, or bowls.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 3-4 pound beef roast
  • 1 Tablespoon Kosher salt
  • 4 teaspoons Middle Eastern Seasoning
  • 3 Tablespoons avocado oil
  • 1 cup beef or chicken broth
  • 1 medium red onion, halved and sliced thinly
  • 1 Tablespoon minced or finely grated garlic
  • Pinch crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 Tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup fresh chopped cilantro (optional)

Instructions

  1. Season the Roast: Rub the kosher salt and Middle Eastern seasoning evenly all over the beef roast, ensuring it is fully coated for maximum flavor infusion.
  2. Sear the Beef: Heat the avocado oil over high heat in a large stainless steel or cast iron pan. Place the seasoned roast in the pan and sear for 3-4 minutes on one side until a deep golden brown crust forms. Flip and sear the other side similarly.
  3. Transfer to Slow Cooker: Move the seared roast to a 4-7 quart slow cooker. Pour the broth into the pan used for searing, scraping the bottom to loosen the flavorful browned bits, and then pour the broth into the slow cooker around the roast.
  4. Add Aromatics: Arrange the thinly sliced red onion around the roast inside the slow cooker. Sprinkle the minced garlic and crushed red pepper flakes directly onto the top of the roast.
  5. Slow Cook the Meat: Cover the slow cooker and cook on low heat for 8-9 hours or until the beef is tender and easily shreds with two forks. Optionally, flip the roast halfway through cooking (after about 6 hours) to ensure even cooking.
  6. Shred and Finish: Remove the roast and shred the meat using two forks. Return the shredded beef to the slow cooker so it can soak up the cooking juices. Stir in the freshly squeezed lemon juice and sprinkle with chopped cilantro before serving.

Notes

  • For best results, use a well-marbled beef roast such as chuck or brisket for tenderness and flavor.
  • If you don’t have Middle Eastern seasoning, you can make your own blend with ground cumin, coriander, paprika, cinnamon, and allspice.
  • Flipping the roast midway through cooking is optional but helps even heat distribution.
  • Serve this shredded beef in pita bread with tzatziki, or over rice or salad for a delicious gyro-inspired meal.
  • Leftovers keep well refrigerated for up to 4 days or can be frozen for up to 3 months.
