This Healthy Blueberry Chia Jam recipe is a quick and easy way to enjoy a low-sugar, no-pectin homemade jam. Made with fresh or frozen blueberries, lemon juice, lemon zest, optional maple syrup, and chia seeds, this jam is naturally thickened by chia without the need for added pectin or excessive sugar. Perfect for spreading on toast, stirring into yogurt, or adding to desserts, it’s a wholesome, flavorful alternative to store-bought jams.

Ingredients

Jam Base

  • 4 cups fresh blueberries (or thawed frozen blueberries)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon zest (from approx. 1 large lemon)
  • 1/3 cup lemon juice (from approx. 1 large lemon, the same lemon used for zest)
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup (optional)

Thickener

  • 1/3 cup chia seeds

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: Add the blueberries, lemon juice, lemon zest, and maple syrup (if using) to a medium saucepan.
  2. Simmer and Mash: Simmer the mixture over medium heat for about 5 minutes until the blueberries start to burst. Then gently mash about half of the blueberries with a potato masher or large fork, leaving chunks for texture.
  3. Boil to Reduce: Increase the heat and bring the jam to a boil for 5 minutes to reduce some of the liquid and concentrate the flavors.
  4. Add Chia Seeds: Turn off the heat and stir in the chia seeds thoroughly to help the jam thicken.
  5. Store the Jam: Transfer the jam to clean, dry jars and refrigerate or freeze for later use. The jam will continue to thicken as it cools.

Notes

  • You can adjust the sweetness by adding or omitting the maple syrup according to your taste preferences.
  • Use fresh or fully thawed frozen blueberries for best results.
  • Chia seeds act as a natural thickener, so there is no need to use pectin.
  • Store jam in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or freeze for longer storage.
  • Enjoy on toast, yogurt, oatmeal, or as a topping for desserts.
