This refreshing homemade lemonade recipe combines freshly squeezed lemon juice with a simple syrup made from sugar and water, diluted with cold water for a perfectly balanced, tart, and sweet summer drink. Easy to prepare in just 15 minutes, it’s perfect for serving chilled over ice and garnished with lemon slices or mint.

Ingredients

Simple Syrup

  • ½ cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • ½ cup water

Lemonade

  • 1 cup freshly-squeezed lemon juice (from about 5-7 lemons)
  • 4 ½ cups cold water
  • Ice (for serving)
  • Lemon slice or mint (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Make the simple syrup: In a small saucepan, combine the sugar and water. Heat over medium heat, stirring continuously until the sugar fully dissolves to form a smooth syrup. Remove from heat and allow it to cool completely before using.
  2. Mix the lemonade: In a large pitcher, combine the freshly squeezed lemon juice and 4 cups of cold water. Gradually stir in the cooled simple syrup, tasting as you go to adjust the sweetness to your preference.
  3. Adjust and serve: If desired, add up to ½ cup more cold water to dilute the lemonade further for a lighter, less tart flavor. Chill the lemonade in the refrigerator or serve immediately over ice. Garnish with lemon slices or fresh mint leaves for an appealing presentation. Enjoy your refreshing lemonade!

Notes

  • You can substitute granulated sugar with honey or agave syrup for a different sweetener.
  • Adjust the amount of simple syrup according to your desired sweetness level.
  • For a sparkling version, replace some or all of the cold water with sparkling water.
  • Freshly squeezed lemon juice gives the best flavor; bottled lemon juice will alter the taste.
  • Store leftover lemonade in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
