Ingredients

Meat

  • 2 lbs. ground beef

Chili Sauce

  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 8 oz. tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup white onion, finely minced
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper
  • 1/2 tsp. onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1 Tbsp. chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp. ground mustard
  • 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tsp. brown sugar

Instructions

  1. Brown the beef: Over medium-high heat, in a large pot, brown the ground beef, breaking it up into small crumbles as it cooks. Once browned, drain excess fat and return the beef to the pot.
  2. Add ingredients: Incorporate ketchup, tomato sauce, water, finely minced onion, salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, chili powder, ground mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and brown sugar into the pot. Stir everything thoroughly to combine.
  3. Simmer: Reduce the heat to low and let the chili mixture simmer for 30 to 40 minutes, stirring occasionally. If the chili becomes too thick, add a bit more water or ketchup to reach the desired consistency.
  4. Serve: Spoon the hot dog chili generously over cooked hot dogs and enjoy immediately.

Notes

  • For spicier chili, increase chili powder or add a pinch of cayenne pepper.
  • Drain the beef well to prevent greasy chili sauce.
  • Use finely minced onions to ensure they meld into the sauce without noticeable chunks.
  • Keep the heat low during simmering to avoid burning or sticking.
  • Leftover chili can be refrigerated for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 2 months.
