This blackened salmon recipe delivers a perfectly spiced, crispy crust with tender, flaky salmon inside. Using a flavorful blackening seasoning and cooked quickly in a hot skillet with avocado oil, this dish is a simple yet impressive option for a quick weeknight dinner or elegant meal. Optional lemon adds a fresh brightness to complement the bold spices.

Ingredients

Salmon

  • 4 large salmon fillets

Seasoning

  • 4 teaspoons Blackening Seasoning

Other

  • Avocado oil, for frying (enough to cover the skillet bottom)
  • 1 lemon (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the salmon: Place the salmon fillets on a large plate. On a separate smaller plate or shallow bowl, spread out the blackening seasoning evenly.
  2. Coat the salmon: Place each fillet skin-side up onto the seasoning, pressing gently so the spices adhere thoroughly on the other side. Return the fillets to the plate.
  3. Preheat the skillet: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add enough avocado oil to just cover the bottom.
  4. Test the heat: Flick a few drops of water into the pan; the oil should sizzle loudly indicating it’s hot and ready.
  5. Sear the salmon: Place the salmon fillets, spice-coated side down, into the hot oil. Cook for 60-90 seconds undisturbed to form a crust.
  6. Cook through: Flip the fillets, cover the skillet with a lid, reduce heat to medium, and cook for an additional 4-5 minutes until the salmon flakes easily with a fork and is cooked through.
  7. Serve: Remove from the heat and serve immediately, optionally squeezing fresh lemon over the fillets for added brightness.

Notes

  • Use fresh, high-quality salmon fillets for best flavor and texture.
  • Adjust cooking time slightly depending on the thickness of the fillets.
  • Blackening seasoning can be homemade or store-bought; adjust spice level to taste.
  • Avocado oil is preferred for its high smoke point, but other neutral oils can be used.
  • Serve with rice, vegetables, or a fresh salad for a complete meal.
