Jamu Juice is a vibrant and health-boosting turmeric ginger drink inspired by traditional Indonesian herbal remedies. This refreshing beverage combines fresh turmeric and ginger with coconut water, lemon juice, and a touch of honey, enhanced by a pinch of black pepper to help maximize absorption. Served chilled or warm, it’s perfect for revitalizing your body and soothing your senses.

Ingredients

Fresh Ingredients

  • 1 cup roughly chopped fresh turmeric
  • 1 (2-inch piece) roughly chopped fresh ginger
  • 1 lemon, juiced (about 3 tablespoons juice)

Liquids

  • 4 cups coconut water
  • 2 tablespoons honey (or other sweetener)

Spices

  • ½ pinch of black pepper (optional)

Instructions

  1. Slice: Slice the turmeric and ginger into thin disks. Feel free to leave the skin on if it has been thoroughly washed to preserve nutrients and flavor.
  2. Blend: Place the sliced turmeric, ginger, black pepper, and coconut water into a blender. Blend on high speed for about one minute until the mixture becomes smooth and well combined.
  3. Boil: Pour the blended mixture into a pot and bring it to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer gently for 20 minutes to allow the flavors to meld and the mixture to concentrate.
  4. Add sweetener and lemon: After simmering, stir in the lemon juice and honey thoroughly to add brightness and sweetness.
  5. Strain and enjoy: Strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve, nut milk bag, or muslin cloth to remove solids, resulting in a smooth juice. Pour the strained drink into a glass bottle or jar and refrigerate. Serve chilled or warm, as preferred.

Notes

  • Keeping the skin on turmeric and ginger is optional if the produce is thoroughly cleaned.
  • Black pepper enhances the absorption of curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, but can be omitted if sensitive to spice.
  • Adjust the amount of honey or sweetener according to taste preferences.
  • Store the juice refrigerated in a sealed container for up to 3 days for optimal freshness.
  • Consume within 24 hours if kept warm to maintain flavor and potency.
