Mexican Picadillo is a hearty and flavorful ground beef stew cooked with potatoes, bell peppers, onions, and aromatic spices simmered in a savory tomato sauce and beef broth. Perfectly seasoned with cumin, coriander, and bay leaf, this traditional Mexican dish is great served warm alongside flour tortillas and rice for a satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • ½ cup onion, diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cups potato, peeled and diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 8 ounces tomato sauce
  • 1½ cup beef broth

Seasonings

  • 1 tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp ground black pepper
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • 1 bay leaf

Instructions

  1. Brown the Beef: Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until it is mostly browned. Drain off any grease and return the beef to the skillet.
  2. Sauté Vegetables: Add diced onion, green bell pepper, and potatoes to the skillet. Cook over medium heat until the onion and peppers are softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds to release its aroma.
  3. Add Liquids and Seasonings: Pour in the tomato sauce and beef broth. Stir in salt, black pepper, cumin, and coriander. Add the bay leaf for flavor.
  4. Simmer Covered: Bring the mixture to a simmer, cover with a lid, and let it cook for 10 minutes so the flavors meld and the potatoes start to soften.
  5. Finish Cooking Uncovered: Remove the lid, stir the mixture, and continue cooking uncovered for another 10 minutes or until the potatoes are fully softened and most of the liquid has evaporated.
  6. Serve: Remove the bay leaf and serve the picadillo warm, accompanied by flour tortillas and rice for a classic Mexican meal.

Notes

  • Drain excess grease to keep the picadillo from becoming too greasy and ensure a balanced flavor.
  • Adjust seasoning to taste, especially salt and spices, before serving.
  • You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option.
  • Serve with warm flour tortillas or over steamed rice for an authentic meal.
  • This dish can be made ahead and reheated, flavors improve as they meld overnight.
