A flavorful and quick Pepper Steak recipe featuring tender strips of beef sautéed with vibrant bell peppers and onions in a savory soy-based sauce. Perfect for a hearty weeknight dinner served over rice or noodles.

Ingredients

Beef and Marinade

  • 500 grams beef steak, sliced into thin strips
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce (divided)
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

Vegetables and Seasoning

  • 2 bell peppers, sliced
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt, adjust to taste
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper, adjust to taste

Other

  • 2 tablespoons oil or butter
  • 1 cup water or beef broth

Instructions

  1. Prepare Ingredients: Slice the beef thinly against the grain to ensure tenderness, and cut bell peppers and onion into strips. Mince the garlic cloves finely to release their aroma.
  2. Marinate Beef: In a bowl, combine the beef strips with 2 tablespoons of soy sauce and the cornstarch. Mix until the beef is evenly coated; this will help tenderize the meat and thicken the sauce during cooking.
  3. Sear Beef: Heat oil or butter in a large skillet over high heat until hot. Add the beef strips and sear them quickly until browned on all sides, about 2-3 minutes. Remove the beef from the pan and set aside to prevent overcooking.
  4. Sauté Vegetables: In the same skillet, add the sliced bell peppers, onion, and minced garlic. Cook, stirring frequently, for 3-4 minutes or until vegetables are tender-crisp.
  5. Simmer Sauce: Pour in the water or beef broth along with the remaining 1 tablespoon soy sauce. Add salt and black pepper to taste. Allow the liquid to simmer for about 1 minute until it slightly thickens and the flavors meld.
  6. Combine and Finish: Return the seared beef strips to the skillet with the vegetables and sauce. Toss everything together and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes, allowing the beef to glaze in the sauce and absorb the flavors fully.
  7. Serve: Remove from heat and serve the pepper steak hot over steamed rice, noodles, or your favorite base for a satisfying meal.

Notes

  • For a gluten-free version, use tamari instead of regular soy sauce.
  • Adjust salt and pepper according to your taste preference.
  • Be careful not to overcook the beef to keep it tender and juicy.
  • This dish pairs excellently with steamed rice or fried noodles.
  • You can add other vegetables like mushrooms or snap peas for variety.
