Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 6 tbsp melted butter
  • 10-15 drops red food coloring (natural or regular dye or a mixture)

Sugars

  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup dark brown sugar

Cream Cheese Glaze

  • 4 ounces cream cheese (completely softened)
  • 4 ounces unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 3/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 5 tbsp milk (or more if needed)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, and unsweetened cocoa powder until evenly mixed.
  2. Mix Wet Ingredients: In a liquid measuring cup, combine the buttermilk, white vinegar, vanilla extract, and eggs, mixing gently to combine.
  3. Cream Butter and Sugars: Using an electric mixer, beat the melted butter, granulated sugar, and dark brown sugar in a medium bowl until the mixture is fluffy and well combined.
  4. Add Dry and Wet Ingredients Alternately: Gradually add the dry and wet ingredients alternately to the butter mixture, starting and ending with the dry ingredients. While mixing, add red food coloring in between to achieve the desired deep red color. Mix just until combined.
  5. Prepare Donut Pan: Fit a piping bag with a large tip and fill it with the donut batter. Pipe the batter into a greased donut pan, filling each mold about 3/4 full.
  6. Bake Donuts: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the donuts for about 9 minutes, or until they are set and spring back when lightly touched.
  7. Cool Donuts: Allow the donuts to cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely before glazing.
  8. Make Cream Cheese Glaze: In a large mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, unsalted butter, powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract. Beat on medium speed using an electric mixer until the mixture is smooth and has a glaze-like consistency. Add more milk if necessary.
  9. Glaze Donuts: Dip each cooled donut into the cream cheese glaze, allowing excess to drip off. Optionally, add sprinkles or desired toppings immediately after dipping.

Notes

  • Ensure the cream cheese and butter are softened to room temperature for a smooth glaze.
  • The use of buttermilk and vinegar helps create a tender crumb and enhances the flavor.
  • Adjust the amount of red food coloring depending on your color preference; natural dyes typically require more drops.
  • You can add sprinkles, chopped nuts, or other toppings to the glazed donuts for customization.
  • Donuts should be fully cooled before glazing to prevent melting the glaze.
  • This recipe yields 15 donuts, depending on the size of your donut pan.
