This simple chocolate mousse recipe is a classic, airy dessert made with smooth semisweet chocolate and whipped heavy cream. It requires minimal ingredients and time, delivering a rich and silky mousse perfect for any occasion. The mousse is chilled to set and can be garnished with whipped cream, berries, shaved chocolate, or flaky sea salt for an elegant finish.

Ingredients

Chocolate Mousse

  • 1 ½ cups heavy cream (divided)
  • 6 ounces semisweet chocolate (finely chopped)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of kosher salt

Optional Toppings

  • Whipped cream
  • Shaved chocolate
  • Berries
  • Flaky sea salt

Instructions

  1. Melt the chocolate: Place the finely chopped semisweet chocolate and ½ cup of heavy cream in a heat-safe bowl. Gently melt the mixture using a double boiler or microwave in 20-second intervals, stirring thoroughly after each until smooth and fully combined. Allow it to cool to room temperature before proceeding.
  2. Whip the cream: In a clean mixing bowl, whip the remaining 1 cup of heavy cream together with the vanilla extract and pinch of kosher salt until soft peaks form. This aerates the cream and adds flavor, creating the base for the mousse.
  3. Combine: To lighten the melted chocolate, stir in one-third of the whipped cream thoroughly. Then, gently fold in the remaining whipped cream carefully to keep the mixture airy and smooth without deflating it.
  4. Chill: Spoon or divide the chocolate mousse into small glasses or ramekins. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour to allow the mousse to set and develop a rich, silky texture.
  5. Serve: Just before serving, optionally garnish the mousse with additional whipped cream, shaved chocolate, fresh berries, or a sprinkle of flaky sea salt to enhance flavor and presentation.

Notes

  • Be careful not to overheat the chocolate as it can seize or become grainy; melt gently and stir often.
  • Folding the whipped cream gently helps maintain the mousse’s light and airy texture.
  • For a dairy-free version, substitute heavy cream with coconut cream and use dairy-free chocolate.
  • The mousse can be prepared a day ahead and kept refrigerated, making it convenient for entertaining.
