This Skillet Lasagna is a quick and flavorful one-pan meal combining sautéed Italian sausage, bell peppers, onions, marinara sauce, and bowtie pasta cooked together in a skillet. Topped with melted mozzarella, ricotta, and garnished with parmesan and parsley, it’s an easy and comforting lasagna-inspired dish ready in just 40 minutes.

Ingredients

Vegetables and Aromatics

  • 1/2 cup small chopped green bell pepper
  • 1/2 cup small chopped red bell pepper
  • 1 small chopped onion (about 1 cup)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Meat and Sauce

  • 1 lb Italian sausage
  • 1 24 oz jar marinara sauce
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Pasta and Cheese

  • 16 oz bowtie pasta
  • Ricotta cheese (amount not specified, estimated 1 cup)
  • Mozzarella cheese (amount not specified, estimated 1 cup shredded)

Garnish

  • Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh parsley

Instructions

  1. Sauté Vegetables: In a large skillet with a lid, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the chopped onions and both bell peppers, sautéing until the peppers soften and the onions become translucent.
  2. Cook Sausage: Add the Italian sausage to the skillet with the sautéed vegetables. Season with salt and pepper and cook until the sausage is no longer pink. Drain any excess fat from the skillet, then return it to the stove.
  3. Add Sauce and Seasoning: Pour the marinara sauce into the skillet. Stir in garlic powder, Italian seasoning, and if desired, red pepper flakes. Season again with salt and pepper to taste, mixing everything thoroughly.
  4. Cook Pasta: Bring the mixture to a boil. Add the bowtie pasta, cover the skillet, and reduce heat to low. Let it simmer for about 12 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking and ensure even cooking.
  5. Add Cheeses: Once the pasta is tender and the sauce thickened, stir in ricotta cheese until incorporated. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella evenly on top. Cover the skillet again and cook on low until the mozzarella melts, about 3-5 minutes.
  6. Garnish and Serve: Remove the skillet from heat. Garnish with freshly grated parmesan cheese and chopped parsley before serving for added flavor and freshness.

Notes

  • Drain excess fat after cooking the sausage to avoid a greasy dish.
  • Stir occasionally while simmering pasta to prevent sticking to the bottom.
  • Ricotta and mozzarella amounts are approximate; adjust cheese to your preference.
  • You can omit red pepper flakes if you prefer a milder dish.
  • Bowtie pasta works well, but other short pasta shapes like penne or rotini can be substituted.
