This smoked chicken wings recipe offers a perfect balance of smoky flavor and crispy skin, enhanced by a savory BBQ seasoning and a tangy BBQ sauce glaze. Ideal for sharing, these wings are first slow-smoked to juicy perfection, then briefly broiled to crisp up the sauce-coated skin, making them a crowd-pleaser for any occasion.

Ingredients

Chicken Wings

  • 30 bone-in chicken wings
  • 2 Tablespoons avocado oil or another heat-safe oil
  • 2 Tablespoons BBQ seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon Kosher salt

Sauce

  • 1 cup BBQ sauce, divided (½ cup for tossing the wings before broiling, ½ cup for serving)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the smoker: Preheat your smoker or pellet grill to 275°F, selecting a high smoke setting if your equipment allows.
  2. Season the wings: Place the chicken wings in a large bowl and drizzle with avocado oil. Sprinkle the BBQ seasoning and kosher salt over the wings. Use your hands to toss thoroughly so each wing is evenly coated.
  3. Smoke the wings: Arrange the seasoned wings directly on the grates of the preheated smoker. Cover and cook for 45-60 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F and the skin starts to become crisp.
  4. Prepare for broiling: Line a large rimmed baking sheet with foil or parchment paper and preheat your oven broiler on an upper rack.
  5. Toss with BBQ sauce: Transfer smoked wings to a clean bowl. Pour ½ cup of BBQ sauce over them and toss gently to coat evenly.
  6. Broil the wings: Spread the sauced wings on the prepared baking sheet in a single layer. Place them under the broiler for 2-3 minutes until the sauce crisps slightly. Watch carefully to prevent burning.
  7. Serve: Remove wings from the oven and serve immediately with the remaining ½ cup BBQ sauce on the side for dipping.

Notes

  • Use a meat thermometer to ensure the wings reach an internal temperature of 165°F for food safety.
  • Adjust the BBQ seasoning and sauce according to your preferred spice level or flavor profile.
  • If you do not have a smoker, using a pellet grill with a smoke setting is an excellent alternative.
  • Broiling times may vary depending on your oven; keep a close eye to avoid burning the sauce.
