This Sweet Vidalia Onion Dip is a creamy, cheesy appetizer perfect for parties and gatherings. Featuring sweet Vidalia onions combined with a blend of mayonnaise, sour cream, and three types of cheese, it is baked until bubbly and golden brown. Serve warm with toasted bread or chips for an irresistible treat that balances sweet, savory, and spicy flavors.

Ingredients

Onion

  • 1 Vidalia onion (10-12 ounces) or any sweet onion variety

Dairy

  • 1 scant cup mayonnaise
  • 1 scant cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup shredded Grana Padano cheese (or good Parmesan or Romano cheese as substitute)
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup shredded white cheddar cheese

Seasonings

  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • Fresh cracked black pepper, to taste
  • 4 dashes hot sauce
  • 2 dashes Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to get it ready for baking the dip.
  2. Prepare the onion: Peel the Vidalia onion and slice it in half. Then slice each half in half again, creating four sections. Slice three of these sections very finely and mince the remaining piece. This will help the onion melt smoothly into the dip.
  3. Mix the ingredients: Place the finely sliced and minced onion into a mixing bowl. Add the mayonnaise, sour cream, Grana Padano, mozzarella, white cheddar, salt, black pepper, hot sauce, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix all ingredients thoroughly together to combine the flavors evenly. Taste the mixture and adjust seasoning if needed.
  4. Bake the dip: Spoon the combined mixture into an ovenproof casserole dish. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 35 minutes until the top is browned and the dip is bubbly.
  5. Cool and serve: Remove the casserole from the oven and let it cool slightly. Serve warm with toasted bread or chips for dipping.

Notes

  • Sweet Vidalia onions are preferred for their mild, sweet flavor, but any sweet onion variety will work well.
  • You can substitute Grana Padano cheese with Parmesan or Romano cheese if needed.
  • Adjust the amount of hot sauce and black pepper to your taste preference for spiciness.
  • The dip can be prepared ahead, refrigerated, and baked just before serving.
  • Serve with toasted baguette slices, crackers, or tortilla chips for best results.
